Wide and fast for Weddings ??? I'm assuming your on Canon, so I'd suggest a short fast tele first to go with the kit lens, maybe a 100mm f2 or a 135L if you can run to that much, then look at a 17-55mm f2.8 IS

Full frame but have used it on a 7d with decent results, but obviously equivalent to a 38/112

Ah, makes sense ;-) equiv 38-112 on OP's crop could work well for weddings though, might need a wide to go with that though

All Canon EF fit lenses will work perfectly well on crop bodies, you just get the 1.6 crop factor.
The EFS lenses will only fit on the crop sensor bodies due to the position of the back lens element.
Third party lenses designed for crop senors bodies will fit the Full frame bodies but usually suffer from vignetting of the image.
I have had excellent results with a 300mm F4 on a 7D as shown above

I'd personally say scrap the kit lens Canon 18-55, it's plastic and shoddy, you can't achieve the sharpness you'll want (especially for a wedding) and it has chromatic aberration issues (colours fringing around edges towards the edge of the lens).

The Canon 24-70 2.8 is a gorgeous lens although a bit too tight for general use as the bottom end is a around 36mm (as apposed to 27mm of the 18-55mm). I'm typically a canon user to unsure of a standard short zoom to replace the 18-55 with but for a wide angle the Tokina 10-20mm is being heralded as the best wide budget zoom going (over the sigma alternative even).

Maybe just look at renting lenses on a short term basis - Calumet do 3 day for 1 days cost over weekends - and then you can try different things to find what you want and asking their advice would be good too as they see the lenses go out daily and will know whats getting used and whats good etc

hope this is helpful

I thought canon crop was 1.4 and Nikon was 1.6?

Actually Canon do a 1.3x crop factor like the 1D, and the APS-C 1.6x crop factor like the 7D.

All Nikon APS-C sensors have a 1.5x crop factor.

Totally off topic but my OCD just wouldn't let it lie ;)
