Welcome to the 'I Just Wanna Tek Gud Photos' Blog

At least once a month we get out as a group on an organised outing of some description, and being a group of people who enjoy taking photos we usually come home with a very interesting and generally appealing selection of photos.  This blog is a record of where we have been and the photos we took at the time.

Old Factory Ghost Hunting

As amateur photographers there is nothing we enjoy more than an exclusive look around somewhere interesting, so when member ColinER managed to swing us an invitation to take a tour around a local Refractory Products manufacturing site we jumped at the chance.  Of course, there was talk of a ghost living somewhere on site, nobody has ever seen it but it is always there in the corner of your eye.

Could the ghost hide from a bunch of particularly enthusiastic photographers?  Let's find out by looking through our collection of photos.

Nice photos Jase, I decided after a lot of playing that these would look best in the style of an early horror movie.

Ok, so maybe some of the ghost photos were a little staged, but it was still very scary being in an old refractory late on a Sunday evening.

Anyway, thank you for reading this little article and looking at our photos.  We have plenty of other articles from other places we have visited over the years so please do stick around and browse our archives.  We also have a Facebook page and a Twitter feed if you want to keep in the loop.

If you are a photographer yourself and fancy joining us on a future outing then create yourself a free account on this website to get onto our mailing list, and if you're a Facebooker or a Flickrer you can join our groups on there too.

Our Tour of the Curzon Cinema

It is no secret that the new Curzon Cinema in Sheffield used to be a bank; the words Sheffield Banking Co. Ltd. are etched under the Curzon sign above the front door.  We knew that this was a listed building that had been carefully and lovingly converted into an ultra-modern cinema, where many of the bank's original features were still in tact... but none of us were prepared for the first thing we saw on our tour!

What you are reading now is an account of a tour that 'I Just Wanna Tek Gud Photos' photo group, hereafter referred to as 'we', took on Sunday morning 22nd March 2015.  The staff and management of the brand new Curzon Cinema in Sheffield City Centre very kindly allowed us access both front and back of house so that we could really get a feel for this magnificent building.

So, let us begin at the beginning...

The Entrance

The first thing you will notice is the very imposing front door, flanked on both sides by magnificent pillars and the Curzon sign sat atop the old Sheffield Banking Co. sign.

As you go through the black double doors you are straight into the lobby.  There is a bar in front of you which doubles as the reception, a lounge to the right and screens to the left.  All seems business as usual for a cinema until you look up and notice that you are actually standing in the former bank's lobby complete with a massive clock and elaborately decorated ceilings.

Down to the Vaults

We were just starting to take in the majesty of the lobby when our guide opened a discrete door and unveiled one of the building's hidden treasures... the vaults!  At the bottom of a flight of stairs we found ourselves in an entirely different place; rooms with cages, safes, blast-proof doors, and miles upon miles of cables.

It was also a treat for us technology buffs to be able to get a look at the 'projection room' which is less like the giant cans of film mounted on a spinning projector and more like a modern server room, which of course it basically is.

And finally...

We as a group would like to extend a massive thank you to everyone at Curzon for making us feel very welcome.  There is a real sense that people working there are proud of the achievements and work that went into creating it and it makes for a friendly and relaxed atmosphere, just what you need when you go see a movie.

Thanks to you too for reading!  We have plenty of other articles from other places we have visited over the years so please do stick around and browse our archives.  We also have a Facebook page and a Twitter feed if you want to keep in the loop.

Walk Around Park Hill Flats

January 2015 - Urban Splash are now most of the way through the redevelopment of Park Hill Flats and there is now only 1 of the 5 phases left to be redeveloped, so we saw this as our last opportunity to have a look around what was left of the original streets in the sky.

We met on what was a chilly but sunny morning at the top of the amphitheatre behind the train station and then slowly walked down and back up the frontage before venturing into the concrete skyways. Most of the flats are boarded up now which gave it a lot of atmosphere, albeit a much different feel to when 1000 people lived there.  We talked a lot about 'leading lines' whilst taking our photos, so hopefully you will see a few in our selection of shots.

There is a section at the bottom of this page for comments if you have any feedback, let us know what you think of our photos.

Tour of the Sheffield Arena

December is always a tricky month to arrange outings so we decided to take this one indoors and had a poke around the Sheffield Arena.  The arena was set up for ice hockey when we arrived but it was still a lot warmer than it was outside!

Poking around the arena gave us some great opportunity to play about with perspective and leading lines, plus the sharp contrast between the white ice and dark seating areas provided another satisfying challenge.

Here are some of the photos we came home with.

Tour of the Henderson's Relish Factory

As much as we at IJWTGP enjoy a good walk around a reservoir we always get especially excited when we get to bring our cameras somewhere special that you couldn't just turn up to on your own.  Every now and again we are offered a once in a lifetime opportunity to take a tour behind doors which are usually closed; these are the photos from one of those opportunities.

If you've never lived in Sheffield you might not be familiar with Henderson's Relish, for everyone else there's a good chance that you have a bottle within 10 paces of you as you read this. Henderson's has been a Sheffield institution for over 100 years, they recently moved to a brand new production facility and they very kindly gave a handful of us a tour of this new factory.

A big tekker thank you to everyone from Henderson's for giving us this opportunity.

On the evening of the 15th October 2014 members of our group were given a guided tour of the Madina Masjid, the Mosque on Wolseley Road in Sheffield.  We were made to feel very welcome right from the start; our guides were very patient whilst we carefully photographed every inch of every room.  It was also pointed out that we hold the honour of being the first photography club to have been given access to this building which is another proud moment in this group's history.

We as a group extend our thanks to the management, the volunteers and everyone in the Mosque who allowed us to take their photograph as they gave prayers.  We all thoroughly enjoyed looking around the building and left with a much greater understanding of the traditions and culture of Islam.

So, without any further ado, here are some of the photos our members came home with.  We have offered these photos to the Sheffield Islamic Centre Madina Masjid Trust to freely use on their website; if you would like to use these for any other purposes please contact the member who took it for permission.  Let us know what you think of the building or our photos in the comments section below.

Thank you to our Tour Guides for the very interesting tour around Sheffield's Mosque. It's a fascinating modern building that is clearly a shining example of community spirit in Sheffield.

Sheffield Central Library

So here are a couple from my attempts. Very challenging lighting - I really wanted to practice with the flash, which made for some pretty dud shots and a few interesting ones. I flipped between flash on and flash off. I personally quite liked the first one below - the black hole of bookishness, but does it work? That is the question?

Into the Bookworm Abyss - Sheffield Library Tour by Bighair63, on Flickr

Below, I wanted to capture the vast expanse of books. I used my 10-20mm Sigma lens at f5.6, ISO 1600, 10mm. I would like to have used a smaller aperture but without a tripod, it was nigh on impossible.
